Know How Companies Manufacture Jars and Containers

Stretch blow molding

In blow molding, a company will form hollow plastic parts. The machinery will inflate soft plastic into a cavity with a mold. This technology comes from the industry of glass blowing. When it comes to making containers and jars, the three main types are injection blow molding, extrusion blow molding, and injection stretch blow molding.

Importance of Blow Molding

Blow molding is important in industries to making one-piece plastic parts that are hollow. This can include water cans, plastic soda bottles, and soap bottles. A few other things made with the reheat stretch blow molding process can include:

  • Trays
  • Toys
  • Coolers
  • Watering cans
  • Containers

The Blow Molding Process

To manufacture jars and containers, a facility will use a two-part process. The first step in the reheat stretch blow molding process involves creating tubes of melted plastic. These tubes are Preform. The base of the blow molding process needs this, no matter what the type of container. The second part of the process can then begin.

The second part of the process involves using air to inflate the preform to the right shape. One of the three processes will shape the preform. This can be extrusion blow molding, injection stretch blow molding, or injection blow molding.

Injection Stretch Blow Molding

The first step in this process involves an injection. The melted polymer will flow into the cavity for injection to make a preform. The core pin will create the inner diameter of the container while the injection cavity will create the outside of this preform.

After this step, the PET stretch blow molding machine will hold the part by the neck and rotate it by 90 degrees. When it has reached the right temperature, the machine will stretch the preform, thus giving the process its name. The machine will infuse air into the preform to create the final shape. While the preform is still in this area, the molds will close. A rod will use two levels of air pressure to stretch this part. It remains in the area until it cools off.

This is a popular method to create products such as soft drink bottles, chemical containers, personal care product containers, and cooking containers. The main material that this process uses is PET plastic.
