5 Key Factors to Consider When Choosing an Injection Molding Material

Injection Blow Molding

Different types of plastics have different properties and benefits for molding. With so many types of resins available today, it can seem daunting to choose the right type of material for injection blow molding.

If you need a strong material for your plastic molding machine, then ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) can benefit you. It has a lot of mechanical and impact strength. Many industries and applications use this material – everything from piping to automotive. One benefit of this material is that a metal coating can easily adhere to it. If you are making a showerhead, a desktop phone, or a handle, ABS can work well.
However, one factor to consider is that ABS does not have good resistance to chemicals. If you have an application that requires UV resistance or electrical insulation, this may not be the right choice.

Celcon, or Acetal

Celcon is the brand name of Acetal. When it comes to injection blow molding, this material has good lubricity on the surface. It also features better resistance to chemical solvents than ABS. This is a good material for mechanical, food and beverage, and other household applications. It works well for manufacturing bearings and gears as well, especially in automotive applications. However, for high heat environments, this is not the best choice.

Polypropylene (PP) is a flexible choice for fluid management, packaging, household goods, and fluid processing. In addition, automotive applications use it. This is a flammable material that is vulnerable to radiation from UV rays. This applies to all grades of PP. However, you will find that it resists electricity and chemical solvents well.

If you need an economical, tough solution that is customizable, then you should choose High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS). You can print, bond, glue, and decorate the surface easily. Prototypes, merchandising applications, displays, and printed graphics all use this material. When you are working with this material and injection blow molding machinery, you will find that it is flammable. However, you can get versions that resist flames well.

If you need a flexible injection molding material, then Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is a good choice. Many companies use this material for housewares and consumer goods. Electronic wiring and medical products also use this material. However, you may find that this material has difficulties when you are bonding it. You should not use this material in high-temperatures or harsh weather.
